People choose to get brow lifts or a browplasty for a number of reasons. This cosmetic surgery is often done by a number of people to help them feel more self-confident. Reasons For A Brow Lift

Some of the reasons for getting a brow lift include:

  • Extra skin hanging over the eyes

Brow lift helps get rid of extra skin or fatty tissues which hangs over a person’s eyes.

  • Saggy eyebrows

Some people are born with shaggy eyebrows which gives them an angry or fatigued look. These saggy eyebrows can make people look less friendly or approachable than they really are. Brow lifts help raise sagging eyebrows, giving you a more relaxed and calm appearance.

  • Clears facial creases

The older a person gets, the more lines and facial creases they get. Majority of people would rather look younger than they really are and smoothening facial creases is one way to do so. Raising your brows help clear up the lines between the brows which makes a person look aged. This cosmetic procedure can present a person with a more youthful appearance.

  • Improve vision

When the eyebrows sag, they might have an effect on the eyelid, causing them to be in a lower position that they are supposed to be. This can cause the eyes not to open as widely as they are meant to. When the eyes do not open as widely as they should it can cause vision impairment. This can affect activities such as reading, walking, driving and so on. While vision impairment is not necessarily an effect of sagging brows, sagging brows hinder a person from seeing as effectively as they should.

  • Enhanced self-confidence

A number of people with sagging eyebrows often feel shy about their facial appearance. This is because people mistake their sagging brows to mean anger or tiredness. It makes them less approachable and is usually a feature they dislike about themselves. Brow lift surgery can help increase their confidence when the sagging brows are raised.

Preparing for a brow lift

A brow lift involves some preparations, not just from the surgeon but even from you the patient. The first step to a brow lift is to find a good plastic surgeon and talk to them about getting a brow lift. The plastic surgeon is expected to:

  • Carry out a physical examination

A physical examination will be carried out on you to help the doctor figure out the best treatment options. This physical examination will include an examination of all the parts of your face, especially the forehead area. The parts of your face will also be measured. This process is often wrapped up with a picture of your face taken.

  • Check your medical history

The plastic surgeon will check your medical history and ask you questions concerning them so be prepared. You will be asked about all your medical conditions from the past to the present. During this conversation, make sure you inform your doctor of every medication you are on or have been on not long ago. This information is necessary to avoid complications during surgery. You will also be asked if you are allergic to any drugs or medications.

  • Mental preparation

The surgeon will mentally prepare you for the process and the end result of the surgery. You will get an opportunity to tell the surgeon the reason you want a brow lift and what you really hope to achieve after the surgery. You can also share what you would like your face to look like post-surgery. At this point, the surgeon will also walk you through the risks of the surgery as mentioned.

Other actions you may need to carry out before a brow lift are:

  • Stop taking some drugs: During the talk with your surgeon, he or she will find out if you are presently on any kind of drugs. If you are on medications such as aspirin, supplements and anti-inflammatory pills, you will be required to stop taking them for a period of time. This is because they increase the risk of bleeding.
  • Quit smoking: If you are a smoker, before the cosmetic surgery, it will be required that you stop smoking for a period of time. This is because smoking reduces the flow of blood in your skin. In order to heal properly and as quickly as possible, you need to stop smoking. For this reason, you should expect your doctor to ask you to stop smoking for some days or weeks before the surgery and to also put off smoking after surgery in order to heal.
  • Make post-surgery preparations: Before going in for the brow lift, it is important that you make preparations for after the surgery. Some days after the surgery, you might be required to remain in the hospital in order to be monitored by doctors and nurses. Afterwards, it is advisable that you do not drive yourself home but are driven home. You can ask a friend or family member to come to drive you home or have a cab booked. You might also need someone to stay with you and help you out shortly during your recovery period. Whatever you believe you will need to make your recovery more pleasant, it is important that you make plans for them before the surgery.

Risks of Brow Lift

Despite all the benefits, just like every other surgery, a brow lift comes with some risks. These risks are:

  • Scars

After a brow lift surgery, there might be some obvious scarring on the forehead.

  • Numbness of skin area

After a brow lift, there are chances that you may experience a feeling of numbness on the area of the surgery. This numbness can be temporary, lasting for some days or weeks, or be permanent.

  • Receding Hairline

Although this is not very common, after a brow lift, a person’s hairline might recede. At the area where the incision was made, there might be some hair loss and this area is often the hairline. When this does happen, if the hair does not grow after the healing process, hair grafting or scar excision can be carried out.

  • Lack of symmetry

Natural brows often come off looking symmetrical. After a brow lift, there is a risk of the brow becoming asymmetrical. When the brows are asymmetrical, one of the brows might come off looking higher than it should. Sometimes, this could happen to both of the brows. Majority of the time, asymmetrical brows are expected and will take the right shape while the surgical area heals. If it doesn’t, another surgical procedure will be carried out to adjust it.

  • Bleeding

Bleeding is also a risk of brow lift but with proper care from the doctors, it can be minimized.

  • Infection

Just like every other surgery, after a brow lift, there is a chance of infection. Infections are prevented and treated properly by surgeons.

What to expect during the Brow Lift process

For people who haven’t done any kind of surgery before, getting one for the first time can spring up a feeling of nervousness. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to be calm.

To get a brow lift, you will be visiting a hospital or a special surgical facility. These are places where the surgeon has all their needed equipment for the surgery. When the brow lift is carried out, you will not be awake or feel any pain or discomfort. You will be put to sleep with anaesthetics which will prevent you from feeling any kind of pain. The technique also is usually done between one or two hours.

Different kind of brow lift techniques

There are three different techniques for a brow lift. Whichever technique will be used by the surgeon is fully dependent on what you hope to achieve from the surgery or how you would like to look after the surgery. The technique used will determine where the incisions will be done and subsequently where the scars will form. Some of the techniques which can be used by the surgeon are the:

  • Coronal brow lift

For a coronal brow lift, an incision will be cut behind your hairline on the top part of your forehead. This incision will go from one ear to the other. Afterwards, your forehead will be lifted and arranged into the desired position. The scalp which is in front of the made incision will overlap the scalp behind the incision. The surgeon will then remove the overlapping scalp, sewing together the rest of the scalp to get the desired outcome. Often this coronal brow lift is not carried out on people with thin hair, far back hairlines, or people with a high chance of hair loss. This is because the surgery can make them lose more hair.

  • Endoscopic brow lift

For the endoscopic brow lift, some small incisions will be made behind your hairline. After making the incisions, the surgeon will fix a slim tube holding a little camera and light for visibility into one of the incisions in order to get visuals on your tissues and muscles. Another surgical instrument will be put into another incision with which the tissues in your forehead will be lifted. These tissues will then be anchored in a fixed position with sutures or small screws. Afterwards, the incisions are stitched closed. In some cases, they may be closed with little chips.

  • Hairline brow lift

For the hairline brow lift, an incision will be made between the start of your hairline and the top of your forehead. The surgeon will then take out some small part of the tissue and skin found at the top of your head. The skin will not be taken out from your scalp hence there is a low chance of your hairline receding after the surgery. People with receding hairlines usually opt for this procedure as it helps save the hairline, unlike the coronal brow lift. The scar after this technique is used is usually located along the hairline.

What happens after a brow lift surgery?

After the procedure has been carried out, the surgeon, nurse or intern will wrap the surgical area with a bandage to lessen the swelling. In order to drain out extra blood or fluid after the surgery, the doctor will put a small tube on the incision area. Expect the doctor to give you information on how to take care of the surgical area when you return home. These instructions include:

  • Make sure you don’t carry out any strenuous activities which will affect your head.
  • When you sleep or sit, keep your head elevated at all times.
  • Properly take your pain medications in the way it is prescribed to you by the doctor. Don’t take more without the doctor’s knowledge.
  • Occasionally massage with cold items to help with the swelling.
  • Don’t apply too much pressure on the incisions.

Numbness and itchiness

After the surgery, you might experience some feeling of numbness and itchiness on the area of the surgery. This is normal and will reduce as during the healing process.

Other information about brow lift

The bandages placed on the head will be taken off after 3 to 4 days of the surgery.

Ensure that you do not resume strenuous activities after brow lift without consulting your doctor first. Also, ask your doctor for input on when you can resume washing of hair and bathing normally after surgery.

Swelling of the forehead after a brow lift can last for 2 to 3 weeks. Also, the lines of incision will fade eventually.
